Speaker Sergey Melkonyan claimed on 168 TV that US President-elect Donald Trump had allegedly stated that “Mexico and Canada should become new states of the US.”
Trump joked with Trudeau
US President-elect Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, according to FoxNews, met in late November this year at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. During the meeting, Trump threatened to impose a 25% customs duty on Canadian and Mexican goods upon his official return to the White House, as the countries have failed to control illegal immigration and drug trafficking to the United States at the border.
In response, Trudeau responded that this would kill the Canadian economy, and Trump, in turn, asked whether the Canadian economy could survive only by “benefiting from $100 billion from the United States,” and then made a joke that Canada could avoid customs duties by becoming the 51st state of the United States.
According to the source, Trump’s words caused “nervous laughter” of those present, including Trudeau.
Deep-fake with Trump
Later, a video appeared on X, in which Trump allegedly sends a message to the people of Canada, threatening to impose high customs duties and that the prospect of Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States is inevitable.

However, American fact-checkers revealed that the video was fake and was AI-generated. In particular, the website checkyourfact.com, having uploaded the video to the True Media platform for detecting AI-generated materials, found evidence of the video being fake. Fact-checkers also found out that the video was created by satirist Danny Polishchuk, known for other similar jokes.
Thus, according to American sources, although Trump joked during his meeting with Trudeau about Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States, he did not make any official statements on that matter. In addition, the video message attributed to Trump about the annexation of Canada and Mexico to the United States is fake – deep-fake. Therefore, the 168 TV speaker, based on deep-fake, made a false claim.
