Canadian Foreign Minister did not post about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: media misrepresented her statement

15:23, 3 Apr, 2025

FALSE

A number of Armenian media outlets have attributed a post about the unresolved Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly.

In particular, a number of media outlets (24news.am, “Armtimes,” “Oragirnews,” etc.) claimed that the Canadian Foreign Minister wrote the following: “The conflict of Nagorno-Karabakh remains unresolved, and Canada’s call for a durable solution grounded in international law is crucial in ensuring this issue stays prominent on the global agenda. A lasting resolution must be achieved through genuine negotiations guided by the Helsinki Principles, including the fundamental right to self-determination for the people of Nagorno-Karabakh.”

The Fact Investigation Platform studied the website of the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the minister’s social media resources to determine whether Joly made such a post about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

What did the Canadian Foreign Minister post?

On April 2, the anniversary of the April 4-Day War, the Canadian Foreign Minister made a post on her social media accounts on X and Instagram, commemorating the victims of the war.

“On the anniversary of the 4-Day War of April 2016 in Nagorno-Karabakh, we remember the lives lost and reaffirm Canada’s commitment to peace and dialogue. A lasting resolution can only come through diplomacy and respect for international law,” the Canadian Foreign Minister wrote.

FIP.am, having studied the website of the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, revealed that the last statement in which the country officially made a reference to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict itself was on September 22, 2024, which addressed the anniversary of Azerbaijan’s attack on Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023.

As a matter of fact, Joly did not make the post attributed to her by some Armenian media outlets.

The post by the Canadian Office of the Armenian National Cause was attributed to Joly

Shortly after Canadian Foreign Minister Joly’s post commemorating the victims of the April War, the Canadian Office of Armenian National Cause shared it on its Facebook page attaching its own commentary.

“The conflict in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) remains unresolved, and Canada’s call for a durable solution grounded in international law is crucial in ensuring this issue stays prominent on the global agenda. A lasting resolution must be achieved through genuine negotiations guided by the Helsinki Principles, including the fundamental right to self-determination for the people of Artsakh.,” the Office wrote on its Facebook page.

In fact, some Armenian media outlets attributed the commentary of the Armenian National Cause Office to the Canadian Foreign Minister. However, she has not made any recent statements on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict; her last reference to the conflict was made in September 2024.
