During the mass protests held in Yerevan and in other communities of Armenia from April 13 to April 23, 2018, several cases of violence against citizens were recorded in which the police showed inaction. By examining all the videos and photos covering these events, we have tried to separate all those police officers, who indirectly supported the violators by showing inaction.
On April 16, 2018, at the intersection of Heratsi and Koryun streets inYerevan, Gor Hambardzumyan, Masis Mayor David Hambardzumyan’s brother, together with his friends, beat several people in the presence of police officers. The police officers shown in the photos below showed inaction during the incident.
On April 22, in Erebouni administrative district, Yerevan, hundreds of people, having their faces covered with medical masks, beat the peaceful demonstrators with batons and electrocuted them.
The behavior of the masked people did not change in the absence the police officers, nor did it change in the presence of them, as the police officers were only trying to act as separators or very often as simply observers. The following officers shown in the photos below are the police officers, who were particularly inactive in Erebuni. During the Erebuni incident, there were almost no police officers, so we just recorded a few police officers’ inactivity. Moreover, further clarification is necessary to understand where the police were exactly when a gang of over one hundred people were forming and committed violence against the peaceful protesters.
On April 21, on Yerevan-Etchmiadzin highway, in administrative district of Parakar, Yerevan, former RPA MP Arakel Movsisyan’s supporters resorted to violence against demonstrators who were marching to Yerevan. Before actual violence, with silent support of the police, the supporters of Arakel Movsisyan were hindering the free movement of the participants of the march. In the photos shown below, we spotted the police officers who demonstrated inactivity that day.
